About Freeborn Eagles Rugby
The Freeborn Eagles Rugby Club is based in Albert Lea and proudly serves athletes from Freeborn County and the surrounding communities. Since our start in 2017, our club has grown from a small local program into a competitive and respected rugby organization focused on player development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and community. We are committed to creating opportunities for athletes of all ages to learn and enjoy the game while building confidence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships.
Freeborn Eagles Rugby competes in the Minnesota Youth Rugby (MYR) League and regularly challenges some of the top youth programs across the state. In addition to league competition, our teams also participate in open tournaments and travel opportunities when they arise, giving players valuable experiences competing against teams from other regions. Our program offers a pathway for athletes to progress through the sport, from youth rugby all the way through high school competition. The club is open to players throughout Freeborn County and neighboring communities and is dedicated to growing the game of rugby in southern Minnesota.
Our Programs
Flag Rugby
Our foundation program introduces young athletes to the fundamentals of the game through fun and inclusive play. This program is encouraged for children K-5th grade just being introduced to Rugby. This is a non contact program that will require minimal travel and be hosted in Freeborn County.
U14 Development
For athletes looking for a competitive edge, this level provides structured training and regional league play. This program is designed for ages 11-15 (5th-8th grade) to gain skills and knowledge before heading into the next level of play. We offer both a boys and girls team for this level. The Spring Season starts in May and ends in June with 5 Saturday Jamborees taking place around the State. The team practices 1-2 times per week starting in April.
U16 and U18
The pinnacle of our program, designed for athletes seeking to master the sport at a high level of competition. We have a boys and girls team. This is for ages 16-18 with some exceptions for younger athletes playing at a higher level. Highschool 9th-12th grade. Season training starts March 1st, practices are held 2 times a week with one strength training day. Competition begins the second week in April and ending with the State Tournament the first weekend in June.
We are dedicated to fostering a culture of character and community in Freeborn County, building the next generation of athletes through inclusive play and shared growth.
How to Register
To participate in Freeborn Eagles Rugby, all players must complete registration through Rugby Xplorer.

Youth Programs
Our Flag Rugby and Middle School Rugby programs are offered through Community Education, providing a fun and welcoming introduction to the sport for younger athletes. These programs focus on skill development, teamwork, and learning the fundamentals of rugby in a positive environment.
